Background of the study
Online language use in Nigeria has evolved significantly with the advent of diverse social media platforms. WhatsApp and Facebook, in particular, have emerged as dominant channels for communication, each fostering unique linguistic practices. WhatsApp facilitates rapid, informal messaging that often incorporates colloquial expressions, abbreviations, and emoticons, while Facebook supports more formal, extended discussions enriched with multimedia and longer text forms (Ibrahim, 2023). The divergent functionalities of these platforms influence language use, with WhatsApp encouraging spontaneous conversational styles and Facebook promoting reflective, structured discourse. This comparative study investigates how platform affordances shape language use among Nigerian users, examining differences in lexical choices, syntactic structures, and pragmatic markers. The research explores the role of cultural factors, audience size, and communication context in driving these variations. By contrasting these platforms, the study aims to uncover the underlying mechanisms of digital language adaptation and their implications for language evolution in Nigeria (Okafor, 2024). The findings will offer insights into how digital communication strategies are tailored to suit specific social media environments and the consequent impact on overall linguistic behavior.
Statement of the problem
Although WhatsApp and Facebook are widely used in Nigeria, there is a lack of comparative research that systematically analyzes how language use differs across these platforms. Existing studies often address these platforms in isolation, failing to capture the interplay of informal and formal communication styles across different digital environments (Chukwu, 2023). This research gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of digital language adaptation and its socio-cultural implications, leaving educators and policymakers without clear data to inform language planning in online contexts (Ibrahim, 2023).

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of online language use on two major social media platforms in Nigeria. The insights will benefit linguists, educators, and policymakers by highlighting the influence of digital platforms on language evolution and guiding strategies for effective communication in diverse online settings (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
Limited to analyzing WhatsApp messages and Facebook posts among Nigerian users; it excludes other platforms and offline interactions.
